Our task was to document and journey map the experiences of providers, clinic managers and executives with the company. Subjective and objective date were gathered, combed through, categorized and evaluated. Each step of the journey called for a design decision - what was the most impactful and considered way to convey this data point? In some cases, hover text or carefully chosen interview text conveyed information. In others, an interactive custom component pulled the user in. Finally, video snippets highlighted some of the clearest ‘aha’ moments and served to underline the enormous emotional impact of the worst pain points. Myself, our senior and junior designers, and stakeholders worked closely as a team. We all stepped up as necessary, with often overlapping responsibilities for interviewing subjects, transcribing, collating and recording. No punches were pulled in delivering to leadership an unsparing picture of the challenges faced in the current health care landscape. While the organization’s security dashboard software covered a wide operational window and had good granular analysis capability, user research indicated the UI was confusing and poorly laid out. This led to security engineers being unaware of or unable to access key capabilities. Building on user feedback, I first redesigned site navigation to be secure and intuitive. Next, I revised each page and tab with familiar design components from our internal library. Interactive elements within the UI were highlighted as calls to action using familiar patterns and symbols. Cluttered charts and data visualizations were cleaned up, and users given control over the level of detail they needed to see. Working with a small team of two junior developers, we established a biweekly cadence of meetings and design reviews.
